Rescued From Shipwreck
The history of the magnificent sailing ship Seraph is itself steeped in the romanticism of the sea. She was built in Denmark in 1906 - a true sailing ship with no engine- and for 60 years plied the dangerous sub-artic waves as a North Sea trading vessel, crossing lines of latitude with the last of the great tall ships of the 19th century.
Later, a series of rich pleasure-seekers bought her and she began a life of cruising the warmer climes between the tropics. One night, in the monsoon waters of the Andaman Sea, a mountainous wave smashed Seraph against a reef off the Similan Islands, where she lay wrecked until 1991.
The present owner chanced a rescue mission. He hired Phuket boat corkers - who keep local fishing boats seaworthy - and taught them how to scuba dive so they could brave the depths and seal Seraph's hull. Then, using modern technology, they raised the boat and towed it to Phuket.
Seraph has now been restored to her former glory. The classic lines and complex rigging are complemented by original portholes and wide use of mahogany.
